About "Y's Kids"
135 children registered with the program in 2008. They're also involved in school outreach programs teaching about healthy relationships and violence prevention. 9% of Saskatchewan women age 15 and over have been assaulted by a spouse or intimate partner within the past 5 years (as surveyed 2004), which amounts to 25,000 women. The rate of children's exposure to these assaults varies depending on whether you ask the adults or the children themselves, and whether you count only direct seeing and hearing, or also exposure to the aftermath such as bruises, police coming out, and the context of relationships including tension, control, walking on eggshells, threats and verbal aggression.
In other words, they're not seeing all of the affected children by any means. But the goal is to help as many kids as possible.
What we did to help the YWCA
What we did with your help, was furnish and completely make-over a room at the YWCA that is used as a refuge for kids who have been affected by violence. This room is used as a counselling area, activity, and tutoring room. Before, it was 4 walls, with a few chairs and tables...we made it into a room where kids want to spend time, a room where kids can feel comfortable sharing their feelings and a place to have fun.
