This set, also available on the Timeless label, was
Benny Golson's first album (other than a dismal commercial affair for Columbia) since 1964; he had spent the interim writing full-time for the studios. For this celebratory occasion,
Golson reunites with trombonist
Curtis Fuller in a septet also including trumpeter
Oscar Brashear, trombonist
Thurman Green and pianist
Bill Mays. The music (seven
Golson compositions, including his older "hits" "Blues March," "Whisper Not" and "I Remember Clifford") is not as surprising as his new sound, which had discarded his former roots in Don Byas and
Lucky Thompson for a gruffness closer to
Archie Shepp.
