Hal Galper tends to be underrated, but he is a talented pianist in the modern mainstream/post-bop genre. For this live trio date with bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Victor Lewis, Galper performs five standards, Nat Adderley's "Naturally," and Ronnell Bright's "Sweet Pumpkin." The music is thoughtful, always swings, and has some surprising twists and turns. Although released on both CD and LP, the set (one of Hal Galper's better recordings) will probably be difficult to locate.
