A good offering from one of the most exciting live acts to emerge from Detroit's overflowing music scene. Al Hudson and the Soul Partners are not a traditional vocal group lineup, though they sound like one. The personnel are
Al Hudson (lead vocals),
Kevin McCord (lead vocals & bass guitar),
Cortez Harris (vocals & guitar),
Jack Hall (piano), and
Theodore Dudley, Jr. (drums). This eight-song collection is stuffed with ballads.
Al Hudson sings in a gospel-inspired tenor that's more commonly heard on recordings produced below the Mason-Dixon line.
Kevin McCord has one of the coolest falsettos in soul music; it's similar to the false voice of the late
William Powell (O'Jays). The title track is an epic ballad that reveals Hudson's roots; "Tripped, Slipped, Stumbled and Fell" is a classic '60s love song that features
Hudson, McCord, and
Cortez Harris on vocals. The material could be stronger; still, it's well executed by the Detroiters.
