Album Review

The title of Time Life's 2012 single-disc condensation of their 2010 set The Great Lost Hits is somewhat disingenuous: yes, George's Musicor recordings certainly qualify as lost, as they were out of circulation for decades until the logjam broke free late in the 2000s, but the songs on this skimpy collection primarily consist of re-recordings of earlier hits by Possum. They're good re-recordings -- he was in fine form during the late '60s, so he sounded terrific even when he was on autopilot -- but anybody looking for the original "White Lightning" or "The Race Is On" will be disappointed, while anybody wanting more Musicor-era hits like "A Good Year for the Roses" would much rather go for the double-disc 2010 set, as that's where they reside. So, this disc is entertaining enough -- it's just not what it claims to be.
