Album Review

This 18-track sampler from Bullseye Blues runs through a spate of 1996-1997 vintage releases to cobble together a nice selection from some of the label's better-known artists. Kicking off with the Persuasions' "Life Is Like a Ballgame" (in keeping with the baseball cover art motif), selected highlights from Smokin' Joe Kubek ("Can't See for Lookin'"), Magic Dick & Jay Geils & Bluestime ("Hot Leftover No. 1" and "Hot Leftover No. 3"), Eddy Clearwater ("Mean Case of the Blues"), Ruth Brown and Johnny Adams ("I Don't Know"), Jumpin' Johnny Sansone ("The Talkin' Is Over [The Walkin' Has Begun]"), and Pat Boyack and the Prowlers ("Longwailin'") make this a cut above your garden-variety independent blues label sampler.
