The on-again, off-again relationship of singer
Don Dokken and guitarist
George Lynch has caused the best-known
Dokken lineup to appear and disappear sporadically over the years. But
Lynch and
Dokken bassist
Jeff Pilson seem to be getting along just fine, as 2003 saw the first release credited solely to "
Lynch/Pilson," titled
Wicked Underground. With
Pilson also supplying lead vocals, the album is exactly what you'd expect from two
Dokken vets working together -- melodic mainstream rock with a hard edge ("Breath & a Scream" and "Beast in the Box"), as well as a few tranquil bits ("Inner View"). With the music cut from the same musical cloth as
Lynch and
Pilson's former employer,
Wicked Underground may very well be the strongest
Dokken-related release in years (and yes, that's including subsequent releases by the group still going by the "
Dokken" moniker).
