Gal Costa began her career performing songs by Caetano Veloso, the great and long-legendary songwriter from Santo Amaro in Bahia. This compilation brings together 14 of Costa's interpretations of Veloso's compositions. Some of the tracks are very famous, such as the classic masterpiece "Baby," from the years of the Tropicalismo movement, and "O Quereres." Other tracks, like "O Amor," "Milagre do Povo," and "Vaca Profana" are more "obscure." Contrary to most compilations of this kind, the repertoire on this CD mostly avoids the most obvious songs, and this makes it all the more interesting. The fact that Gal Costa almost always seems to be in her best-form while performing songs by Caetano Veloso, of course, also helps in making Canta Caetano one of the best Gal Costa compilations on the market.
