This compilation from Sony -- celebrating "today's chart topping female artists who inspire, entertain and move us" -- definitely delivers. It includes memorable singles from
Mariah Carey ("Always Be My Baby"),
Jennifer Lopez ("Waiting for Tonight"),
Destiny's Child ("Survivor"), and
Sarah McLachlan ("Fallen"). It also moves easily through genres, including the slinky aggro-pop of
Pink's "Don't Let Me Get Me" alongside
Martina McBride's pretty contemporary country lullaby "In My Daughter's Eyes" and no less than two American Idol winners in
Kelly Clarkson and
Fantasia.
Sade's 1992 slow jam hit "No Ordinary Love" provides some historical context, as does
Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn," which despite her lightweight delivery remains one of the most memorable and relentlessly buoyant singles of the 1990s. Voices also gets credit for including the unedited version of "My Happy Ending." "All the things you hide from me/All the sh*t that you do...." -- for some reason it really is inspiring to hear
Avril Lavigne, like, swear and stuff.
